Our Guide to Byron Bay’s Hinterland

Our Guide to Byron Bay’s Hinterland

A short 5-minute drive inland from Byron, you’ll be surrounded by rolling, lush green hills, farmland and ancient rainforest. There’s so much to discover in Byron Bay’s hinterland, and we would certainly recommend a day trip next time you’re in the area.

The best eats

If you really want to get a taste of the hinterland, head out to the quaint village of Newrybar and dine at the Harvest restaurant. From breakfast to dinner, Harvest serves up the absolute best of Byron hinterland’s organic produce (and what the owners can’t source locally, they grow themselves on the premises).

Browse the local shops

About 20 mins away from Byron is the thriving little village of Bangalow. It’s a must visit if you love browsing local boutiques for hidden treasures. Bangalow is actually where many Byron locals go to hang out, eat and shop. The historic main street is decorated with fashion, homeware, antiques, art, flower shops and more. Be sure to stop for coffee at Woods too.

Discover Nimbin

If you have more time of your hands, you don’t want to miss out on a day trip to Nimbin. This colourful town full of hippies is like no other; a beautiful bubble stuck in the 70s! In fact, this small dairy town became the heart of Australia’s alternative living when it hosted Aquarius Festival back in 1973 and very little has changed since.

World-heritage rainforest

With 5 Gondwana rainforests (Border Ranges, Wollumbin, Mebbin, Nightcap and Limpinwood) spanning across the Byron Bay hinterland, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to stunning walking tracks. All of these parks have a range of walks depending on your ability, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Swim in natural waterfalls

Looking for a truly authentic waterfall experience? Just a quick 30 mins from Byron, hidden away in Tintenbar, is the lesser known to tourists, Killen Falls. Be prepared for a rocky decent to the watering hole, but it’s the perfect hinterland hang out on a hot day. What’s more, a little further out (approx. 45 mins) is the spectacular Minyon Falls (pictured below).
